State of the Healthcare Industry Hospitals invest millions of dollars annually in financial and clinical IT systems, but tend to spend much less on “the people side of the business.” Staffing expenses currently make up over 52.4% of a hospital’s overhead costs, and staff-related expenses can cost upwards of 70% of an organization’s total costs - easily the largest expense line item on the books. Healthcare employment is projected to grow 29% by the year 2022 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s twice as fast as the expected overall employment growth! If that is not evidence enough to invest in HR, staffing practices have been shown to have a direct impact on patient satisfaction and outcomes, with considerable amounts of research linking staffing variables to patient outcomes, as demonstrated in the graphic below1.
