GATINEAU PARK More than 35,000 hectares of unspoiled land in the Gatineau Hills ( part of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world ) are maintained by the National Capital Commission ( NCC ). Hundreds of kilometres of footpaths wind their way through the park , making it great for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter ( trail maps available from the park ’ s visitor centre in Old Chelsea , Quebec ). MAJOR ’ S HILL PARK Ottawa ’ s oldest park was originally developed in the early 1800s . Colonel John By ’ s residence once stood on this peaceful stretch of land , but the house was destroyed by fire . The Ottawa River , Gatineau , the Parliament Buildings , and the Rideau Canal can all be seen from this site . Several statues ( including one of the colonel ) stand guard over the parkland .
