JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018
SHAPING
SOUND:
AFTER THE
CURTAIN
January 21 – 22 Nothing will change your perspective
on our little blue planet quite like orbiting hundreds
of kilometers above it. Astronaut Terry Virts did just
that as commander of the International Space Station,
taking more photographs from up above than any
other astronaut before him. Those earth-shattering
stills later appeared in the National Geographic book
View From Above—and now Virts is coming to the
Jack Singer Concert Hall to discuss exactly what that
soaring perspective revealed to him about life down
below (page 46).
January 19 - 20 Travis Wall
is directing and dancing with
the Alberta Ballet in a beautiful
mash-up of genres. Shaping
Sound is the story of a man who
lost the love of his life, and with
it his creative voice. The journey
to get it back is a long and hard
one filled with emotion that will
dazzle audiences (page 44).
TWELFTH NIGHT
January 30 - February 24 Calgary’s own
Old Trout Puppet Workshop makes a
splash on the Max Bell stage, reimagining
the shipwreck that separates and
strands twins Viola and Sebastian in the
mysterious land of Illyria. Shakespeare’s
classic romantic comedy is injected with an
added dose of artistry through the use of
inventive props and costuming. Thankfully
the production runs for more than just 12
nights (page 48)!

January 11 If you’ve ever felt ill-equipped to tackle tough scientific subjects, this is for you.
It can be a challenge for scientists to explain their work in ways the general public can
understand, but with the help of inventive exhibits and demonstrations you’ll be well on your
way to becoming a citizen scientist before the night is over. Part of TELUS Spark’s Adults Only
Night series, running the second Thursday evening of every month. Must be 18 or older to
attend (page 46).
