Where ART Lives Magazine Volume 4 Number 3 | Page 48

Kerryann Torres Summer 2018 What is your first memory of creating art? I was four years old in South Africa and one of my brother’s friends, showed me how to draw a palm tree. I can’t remember his name, but I can see his drawing like it was yesterday. Do you have a favorite piece that you have created? What makes it special to you? The Golden Stag. It is an image of a stag with an amazing yellow background and white tiles going behind the deer. I love it so much. The colors to me radiate warmth and happiness and I love that it is tactile. I used a tile enamel paint that makes the tiles touch like tile. Do you have a favorite artist that you admire or that inspires you? I have two that I find so inspiring, both women. Jennifer Gennari, who does amazing wildlife art and Amy Sherald, whose portraits combine color, print and social commentary perfectly. What do you listen to when you paint? Pop music. I need music to be upbeat when I am painting. What tool in your studio could you not live without? Turpentine because I am always changing things and Liquin original medium. Seriously, I could not live without these. Do you have a favorite subject matter? Wildlife and nature. For me, when I connect to nature it is calming and inspiring. Some of the most impactful moments in my life have been with animals and wildlife. I feel strongly that having a pet or experiencing wildlife in nature, deepens our humanity. What is your preferred medium? Oil paints. I love their decadence and richness. 48 kerryanntorres.com
