What is your first memory of creating art ? When I was 12 years old I read an ad in a magazine whose headline was , “ Can You Draw This ”. I sent in my drawing and won the contest and a camera .
Do you have a favorite piece that you have created ? What makes it special to you ? A painting of a birdsnest on a 40 x 40 canvas is one of my favorites . The brushwork and color mixing seemed to come so naturally . I was able to get the essence of what the bird had built and the painting had impact .
Do you have a favorite artist you that you admire or that inspires you ? I have been inspired by Old Masters whose work I have seen in museums and cathedrals I have visited in France and Italy . I have always loved the Impressionists ; I have toured Monet ’ s Giverny and Auvers-Sur-Oise , Van Gogh ’ s small apartment there before his death . There are lots of my contemporaries who make me want to work harder .
What do you listen to when you paint ? A variety of musical artists , Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons , James Brown , Chris Botti , Danny White , classical music .
What tool in your studio could you not live without ? I use a couple of palettes of different sizes but enjoy being able to seal my Masterson palette box to stick in the freezer until the next studio session .
Do you have a favorite subject matter ? Some of my favorite subject matter is found in my own environment such as birds nests I collect from my property and that have been saved for me by friends .
What is your preferred medium ? I paint with oil , watercolor , or acrylic mediums depending on which I feel is more suitable for the subject matter . Other times I switch back and forth to keep myself attentive to the differences of the mediums .
