What is your first memory of creating art ? My first memory of making art is from kindergarten . We were making hats using paper plates , ribbons , paints , crayons , and all sorts of stuff on top . I remember loving this project , that my hat stood out , was much more elaborate and colorful than those made by the other kids . I loved that hat .
Do you have a favorite piece that you have created ? What makes it special to you ? What makes it special to you ? Hmmm ... a favorite piece . I have a pen and ink drawing of a little flute player that I did in the 80s . I made a wood block print of it and printed greeting cards from it , from a printer with a print shop ( not from the internet ). I put 50 cards in a local shop in Ann Arbor and they all sold out . From there , I went on to develop many cards and sell them around the country . The flute player is very sweet , whimsical . A beginning of sorts for me .
Do you have a favorite artist you that you admire or that inspires you ? I am inspired by a number of artists who do figures and faces , including John Singer Sargent , Dan Gerhartz , Kevin Bielfuss , and Malcolm Liepke .
What do you listen to when you paint ? Omar Akram Radio on Pandora . Totally Zen .
What tool in your studio could you not live without ? Well , I think that are a few essentials in my studio ... the lighting , my favorite brushes , and toweling paper . For some reason , I can ’ t paint without some toweling in my left hand .
Do you have a favorite subject matter ? Faces are my favorite , followed by figures and flowers . I ’ m also doing abstracts now , combining abstract shapes and patterns , collage elements , with my figures .
What is your preferred medium ? My preferred medium is oils , but of-late I ’ ve been working in acrylics also , for the more abstract elements .
