Kathy Elliott How often do you paint? How many hours a week? I try to do something every day, some days it may just be research, photographing, or critiquing and processing the next step. I attempt to paint 20 hours or more each week. How would you like to be remembered? As a previous educator, I believe in the importance of being a life long learner. This more than ever applies to my art journey, no matter how much I study there is so much more to learn and experience. I have had amazing and supportive mentors and teachers! I hope what I have experienced I can pass along either through my work or by sharing lessons learned through the process. How do you know when a painting is finished? That’s a hard one. Occasionally it just feels right! If it doesn’t work, I look at the design and composition, colors, valu es, all the rules I know, and try to figure out what is missing. And sometimes, it just gets painted over! Do you have a favorite painting that you have collected by another artist? I have several paintings from artists I have studied with including Rebecca Crowell, Lisa Pressman, Stuart Shils, Ted Nuttall, Jane E. Jones, and Jeff Hirst, and a small sculpture by Michael o’Keefe. I love collecting other artists work! What is the most inspirational place you have visited to date? I believe the museums I have visited are the most inspirational place, most recently, the Agnes Martin exhibition at the Guggenheim. The curvilinear structure of the museum and the linear work of Ms. Martin were an awe inspiring juxtaposition. Where would you take your dream vacation? A secluded villa in Spain or Italy to paint for at least two weeks! What brings you the most joy in your life? Of course, my family gives me the most joy! But painting is a passion that I feel so fortunate to share with others. I have made many art friends that have certainly enriched my life! kathyelliottart.com 82
