Where ART Lives Magazine Volume 3 Number 3 | Page 80

Kathy Elliott May 2017 What is your first memory of creating art? I remember watching my Grandmother, Mother, and Aunt’s crocheting when I was young. The colors of yarn were a source of awe to me. When I was about 10, I received paint by number kits as gifts and I loved the way the paintings came together by placing colors in the correct spaces. Do you have a favorite piece that you have created? What makes it special to you? My favorite piece was the first one I entered into a juried show that won a prize. I loved the painting and it went together easily. Receiving validation that an impartial juror liked it gave me such joy. It became a breakthrough piece for me in that it seemed to be a style that I continue to develop and enjoy. What do you listen to when you paint? Gregory Isakov, Leonard Cohen, Michael Franti are a few. Sometimes I like silence, and often I will listen to an artist interview. Do you have a favorite artist you that you admire or that inspires you? I have so many I love, this is hard one. Richard Diebenkorn for the shapes and composition, Agnes Martin for the simplicity, Giorgio Morandi for the subtle colors and simple shapes, and Cy Twombly for the lines. What tool in your studio could you not live without? My metal paint tube wringer! It gets out the very last bit of paint! Do you have a favorite subject matter? Figurative Abstraction What is your preferred medium? Mixed Media, beginning with either acrylic or oil and cold wax. I love line work that is either subtracted by scraping into the surface or added to the surface using ink, graphite, charcoal, pastel, etc. kathyelliottart.com 80
