Nancy Junkin How often do you paint? How many hours a week? I paint most days of the week, except for when I am traveling. When I am not near my studio and paint, my sketchbook is my creative outlet. How would you like to be remembered? As an artist who creates paintings that really speak to the individual. The greatest compliment I can receive about my work is when someone becomes involved in the painting. I can feel this when I hear comments that one of my paintings reminded someone of a fond memory or that it evoked positive emotions. How do you know when a painting is finished? Over the years, I have learned that I sometimes tend to stop short of finishing…sometimes out of concern of “going too far” and losing what was already on the canvas. To counteract that tendency, I intentionally keep a painting around awhile, live with it, take photographs of it, and then revisit it to put on the final touches. Do you have a favorite painting that you have collected by another artist? There are so many I would love to collect! My favorite piece in my current collection is a small abstract landscape by Dick Evans of Santa Fe. It hangs over my bed. What is the most inspirational place you have visited to date? New York City for its action, movement and people… Santa Fe for its color and the creative art scene… Where would you take your dream vacation? I have a lot on my list but right now, Canada is capturing my imagination. I would love to go to Quebec and experience the French influence and culture. I would also love to see the land- scape in Western Canada. So perhaps I ought to take the train from one coast to another! Tell us something that few people know about you. Even at my “advanced” age, I still have one baby tooth. I like to think it keeps me young. Any other thoughts to share? To me it seems life is best lived doing something that you love, with things you love, surrounded by those you love! What can be better than that?! nancyjunkin.com 60
