I am grateful that I have the opportunity to expose and educate newly injured patients to what’s out there and available within the community! I collaborate with several organizations (including AZSCIA) in the valley depending on the program I’m running. For instance, I work with Daring Adventures for the adaptive cycling program that we offer. Our participants are introduced to this wonderful community organization, and when they feel more comfortable after introduction, the goal is they will participate independent of Barrow and recreate with Daring Adventures on their. It is such a pleasure seeing our patients be introduced to community resources and then see them getting out and active on their own within the community.

I absolutely love working with the spinal cord injury community. In the outpatient center we see patients mostly who are newly injured. When they see me for their initial session, the majority of the time what comes out of their mouth is “I used to enjoy recreating but now I can’t do that anymore”. It is such a great feeling to let them know they CAN recreate, it will just look different. To see these individuals face their fears and be open about trying new experiences is inspiring to me. One of my favorite programs to see people with spinal cord injuries participate in is indoor skydiving. That person might not be able to walk, but they can fly! It’s an amazing thing to watch and see their wheelchair left behind and see them flying. In addition, my life has been enriched by working with AZSCIA. The staff is amazing! It’s an honor to work with such kind hearted individuals who will stop at nothing, and think out of the box, to support the spinal cord community. I’m very grateful to work with them.

I have lived in 16 different cities in my lifetime, and have worked in several different settings providing adaptive recreation throughout my career. I can say that this is the by far the best place I’ve experience for opportunities and support to recreate for those with disabilities. I have learned that this community here in the valley, and beyond, is so open-minded, willing to try new ideas, welcomes partnerships and collaborations, and overall truly cares. My heart is warmed knowing that I can call many in this community my friends, and I hope others feel that same way too.
