My life changed forever on the night of March 7, 1989. I went to bed a healthy, 6'4" college baseball athlete, weighing 205 pounds, only to awake feeling as though I was being electrocuted. I could not move, breathe, or speak to call for help. I thought I was having a stroke. I said to myself, "I am 19 years old, dying, and cannot do anything about it!" I closed my eyes, hoping to die so the pain would dissipate. Fortunately, I awoke with the ability to call for help, which was greatly impaired due to the fact that I learned later: I was drowning in my own blood. My teammate and roommate heard my cries for help and called 911.
