Unfortunately, there is no treatment that can entirely reverse the damage from a spinal cord injury at this level. Rather, medical care is focused on preventing us from further injury as a result of secondary complications and utilizing existing functions.

Connecting with other spinal cord injury survivors played a key role in my recovery. Meeting with other SCI survivors face to face was important because I recognized that I was not alone and that there are others who have been where I was. They not only provided encouragement and support, they also made recommendations and gave tips about how they go about day to day life and provided insights that no medical professionals could. Most importantly, what I learned from meeting with other SCI survivors who have been there done that is there is life after a spinal cord injury.

There is a present study that highlights the effects of SCI on areas like psychology, sexual functions, social adjustments, burden on family, partner relationships, and sleep disturbances. All of the areas I just mentioned affected me in various ways however, the most challenging to me was learning to become a father again.

With time, simple instructions and taking advantage of good advice like drinking plenty of water, I learned I could decrease complications. Therefore, making reintegration back into my family and society a little easier.
