Each month, we want to highlight a consumer of AZSCIA, hear their story and read about all the remarkable things they are doing within the community.

This month, we are highlighting Gabe Gerbic. He is going to tell us about his injury story, challenges he faces living with SCI, and advice he has for individuals who are newly injured. Take a few minutes to read Gabe's inspiring story.

My name is Gabe Gerbic and I am a T-12 paraplegic pursuant to a motor vehicle accident in April of 1988. I was 17 when I was injured and a senior in high school. I made the mistake of accepting a ride in a four-wheel drive with a driver who had been drinking, unbeknownst to me. Where I grew up, in Upstate NY, it was common to off road in fields and I thought nothing would happen but we ended up going over a sand pit cliff and I fracture/dislocated my spine. The rural nature of where I lived meant that the ambulance and firefighters were volunteers and the first one to my accident site was a friend’s father,
