The Youth Transition Coordinator helps high school students transition to post-school living, Ability360 Building Bridges - Empowering Youth with Disabilities into Adulthood assists high school students ages 14-22, to transition from high school into community life. I love to scrapbook and travel when I have time.
What I contribute to the community is an opportunity for individuals with disabilities to live a life knowing they can be a contributing part of the community. People with disabilities with the right attitudes change the world.
For a long time I believed I did not have enough personal experience to share with other people with disabilities. I found out how wrong I was in that thought ~ I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Children's Rehabilitation Services as a toy cart person, providing toys to children waiting on doctors at the clinic. By bringing toys to the children and speaking with their families I found out I had a lot to offer people with disabilities from my life experiences. My favorite program facilitating has been Living Well with a Disability. Living Well with a Disability is a ten week peer-facilitated health promotion workshop for people with disabilities. Participants in the program learn the life skills they need to set and achieve quality-of-life goals and the important role health plays in helping them reach their dreams.
As a Recreational Therapist, I had always wanted to work in the clinical setting. I very much enjoy the working within the community to see consumers grow in their independent living goals from acquiring jobs, learning to drive and becoming more social with other people in the community. A community setting provides more opportunity of time with consumers to achieve their goals, a clinical setting is such a short time in both adjusting and achieving goals.
