Getting my education and earning my independence was a lot more difficult with a spinal cord injury, but worth every struggle. Every day I spend hours doing my care routine, from normal daily activities to hiring caregivers, managing medical supplies and equipment to exercising on my FES bike. Often the tasks are overwhelming and all-consuming, but it's necessary to stay healthy.

My advice to anyone who is newly injured is to perfect your care routines so you can stay healthy and active. Nothing is worse for your physical and mental health than inactivity. Become an advocate for yourself and your health. No one cares more about you and your health than yourself. Focus more on your day to day quality of life than a cure that is likely to be decades away. Every day you have a chance to get up and enjoy life, whether that means spending time with friends and family, participating in adaptive sports, having children, earning an education, building a career, or the many things that make life rewarding. Living with a spinal cord injury isn't easy by any means, but everyone can still live an independent and fulfilling life.
