class and was recognized as Wheaton’s first
wrestling All-American since 2009.
In May 2013 Dan participated in
the 2013 ASICS University National
Championship in Akron, Ohio. He
finished in second place in the 84KG
weight class of the Greco-Roman
Championship. The winner of the weight
class chose to represent the United States
at the FILA Junior World Championships,
and as a result Dan was selected to
represent the United States at the World
University Games in July. Dan earned a
3-1 victory against Alaev Manukchekhr
of Tajikistan in the opening round of the
tournament.
“I decided to just get after it and put
pressure on my first opponent,” Dan says.
“I ended up getting a headlock on him,
and I didn’t pin him, but it got me some
points. I just kept on him and won my
first international match.”
He then lost a 4-1 decision in the
quarterfinals to Javid Hamzatau of
Belarus. Hamzatau would go on to earn
the bronze medal.
“Dan’s greatest strength is being a
competitor—he has proven himself to be
a warrior on the mat. He is also mentally
tough, physical, and coachable,” says
Coach Gruenwald. “He very definitely has
the potential to be a Division III National
Champion and to have a successful
international Greco-Roman career.”
