Colleague Bruce Barraclough sits at right. The laser instrument measures the composition of the rocks and soil in the rover’s landing region. Firing a laser in a series of pulses at these rocks or soil allows scientists to determine which atoms are present as vaporized material of different compositions produces a flash with a characteristic color.
