The History of Santorini
By Tania, Vasw and Stavros
Santorini is one of the most spectacular
islands in the Aegean Sea.Its sea is
enclosed and surrounded by volcanic cliffs
that are either red, brown or greenish a
string of white villages pops
up.
The landscape seem fierce
and unprecedented with the
churches and the traditional
white washed Cycladic
houshes, built on valcanic ad
steep cliffs, Sandorini
Greece’s last active volcano,
which still smolders today, is
located
here. Layer upon
layer of red volcanic rocks,
interspersed with white
residences and specks of greenery, form
an extraordinary
and unique
illustration.
The entire
center of the

island sunk
into the
sea
,
during
a
tremendous volcanic
explosion, 3500 year ago. The
eruption coused tidal waves, which out

believe that the island is part of the
legendary lost
continent of
Atlatics which

What remains
today a crescent-Shaped
island enclosing a vast day , the
largest Caldera on earth, consisting of the
islets of Thirasia, Nea Kameni, Palaia
Kameni, Aspronisi and
Christiana
complex, which consists of the
rocky islets of Christiani,
Askania and Eshati.
From the top of the cliffs ,
where the villages are built,
someone can discern the
green outer slopes of the
mountain and the sea that
haw filled the sunken crater
of the volcano. On Santorini
there is hardly any vegetation
apart from vines. However,
this island has an eerie charm
and is rightly called the “black pearl of
the flegean”
Santorini has a remarkable history that
has shaped not only the island but its
people a history that is evident on the
island even to the present day.Santorini,
occording to Greek mythology was
created from a clod given to the
Argonauts by the sea god Triton, son of
Posidon and Amphitrite. The island
primarily was called “ Strongyli (i.e.
round), due to its circular shape .
All though , there is not enough data on
when was exactly inhabited – before
2000 B.C were the Phoenicians and later
on the Dorians. As time goes by, more
and more people are discovering
