Cinema and TV GREECE Never on Sunday by Angelos, Vaso and Andreas The “NeveronSunday” a romantic comedy ” by Jules Dassin”, starring with Melina Mercouri, filmed in Greece in 1960 and is one of the most famous films of world cinema because of the Oscar-winning music by Manos Hantzidakis. The film led to increase in tourism and location shooting there. But not only was it the product of an American writer-director’s imagination, but it was even resented by many in it’s country of origin. Never on Sunday was the brainchild of American expatriate Jules Dassin. After a promising start in Hollywood as dire ctor of such acclaimed film noirs as Brute Force and the Naked City Dassin had been subpoenaed by the House Committee and Un-American activities because of busy directing a play he received a postponement, only to discover that he scored an international hit in 1955 with the caper film Rififi. The film has as subject a girl Ilia which is whore.But she is different from the other girls with the same profession . Ilia when he shows a Greek festival and on Sundays there never accept customers. At the same time comes in Piraeus Omar an American “scouts” who has an idealistic image of Greece and he’s ‘scout “change” the Ilia. He want to make her “ a better person“.
