THE PAVILION:
Functional reorganization:
As part of the reorganization of the
exhibition venues of the Biennale, in
2009, the historic Pavilion ( former Italian
Pavilion ) in the Giardini is destined to
become a multifunctional and versatile
building, designed to be hub of activity
and permanent point of reference for the
other Pavilions in the Giardini . The
structure of 3,500 square meters ,
including 2,800 square meters of
exhibition space, has been transformed
into a space potentially open throughout
the year that can accommodate the
planned activities and to provide qualified
services to the public . This first
redevelopment project – others are in the
feasibility study – involving the outer face
of the building order to set up the new
features : bookstore , cafeteria,
educational area . The project involved
the renovation of the spaces and the
construction of new facilities including
improved access with the expansion and
creation of new access . These new
openings in addition to the architectural
reordering of the secondary part of the
facade have been realized in order to
create a visual relationship between the
inside and the outside. The green of the
garden thus enters into direct contact
with the built space . The layout of these
spaces has been entrusted to artists
invited by Daniel Birnbaum, Director of
53 . International Art Exhibition :
Massimo Bartolini ( Educational Area
“Sala F”) , Rirkrit Tiravanija
( B o o k s t o r e ) , To b i a s Re h b e r g e r
( Cafeteria “Was du liebst , bringt dich
auch zum Weinen “). The latter won the
Golden Lion for the best artist in the
exhibition.

differentiate environments to ensure
optimal microclimatic conditions in space
and according to the different purposes:
they provide, as well as exhibition spaces
with guarantees of conservation and
special air conditioning , new multipurpose spaces for educational activities ,
workshops and special projects. Part of
the project the completion of the
restoration of the Octagon Room , which
was launched by the City of Venice in
2006 , with the recovery of the paintings
of the dome of Galileo Chini in 1909 and
the restoration of the decorative walls and
terrazzo flooring . The room , equipped
with all facilities for the reception of the
public, will be the fulcrum of the
distribution system of the Pavilion ,
which, starting from the main entrance ,
is reached here from the new functional
areas.
