History BELGIUM The History of Belgium By Achraf and Souleiman The independence of Belgium has been proclaimed in September 1830, but Belgium became a kingdom one year after the independence in June 1831. Our first king was Leopold 1st. At the 19th century, we note that Belgium held the world’s second most powerful industries. The first was England. By the way this period was in the middle of a industrial revolution, witch leaded us to better technologies like electricity, machines. Leopold II (the successor of Leopold I), colonized the Congo, a country in Africa. In 1885, Leopold became the chief of the independent state of Congo. After, in 1960, Congo has proclaimed its independence but it’s always under the control of Belgium. In World War One, Belgian were blocking and defending their territory from German who wanted to attack France by passing through Belgium. Despite their efforts, German defeated Belgians and took control over the country. In the World War Two, Belgium was always under the control of Germany. It was a powerful country when Adolph Hitler was the leader. Unfortunately, loads of Jews in Belgium have been exterminated by the Gestapo. A few years later, countries like France, England and America came to combat the German forces. They successfully chased Germans from Belgium and sent them back to their country at the end of the World War.
