Ingmar Bergman

Ingmar Bergman is one of the most
important movie directors through all
times. He has won a massive number
of awards, and he’s considered by
many as Sweden’s most significant
and important artist.
Ingmar Bergman was born on July 14,
1918, in Uppsala, Sweden. His father was a
Lutheran minister who believed in a very
strict discipline for his children. Raised
under these rigid circumstances, he needed
an escape; and he developed a strong
passion for movies. At the age of 19, he
started to study art and literature at
Stockholm University.
Bergman directed the movie but he was
also the scriptwriter. The movie is about
the siblings Fanny and Alexander whose
father dies and the mother who remarries.
The movie was nominated for six Oscar
and won four of them. The movie also won
three Guldbaggen awards, which is
Sweden’s primary movie award. Fanny and
Alexander has been nominated to fourteen
awards and won nine of them.
Value today
It’s said that Bergman was one of the most
important and best movie directors through
all times – worldwide. Woody Allen has
described Bergman as “probably the
greatest film artist, all things considered,
since the invention of the motion picture
camera”. Also famous directors as Stanley
Kubrick and Martin Scorsese have praised
Bergman for his contribution in film. Today,
squares and streets in Sweden are named
after Bergman. Three foundations are alive
to keep and develop the cultural heritage
that Bergman has left.
Career
Bergman has done a massive number of
movies as a director but also as a
scriptwriter. He was famous all over the
world. He started as a head manager on a
theatre in Helsingborg and continued as a
theatre director in Stockholm, Gothenburg
and Malmö. In the 1950s he became
famous with a few movies, for example The
Seventh Seal. But it was in the 1960s that 71. That’s the number of movies or TVhe became world famous with three new shows that Bergman has done, either as a
movies, Through a Glass Darkly, Winter director or a scriptwriter or even both.
