There are various rules and laws that apply to the number of
hours you can work and the types of jobs you’re allowed to do if
you’re under 18 years old. For more information go to

CAB (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) also have good web pages for young people related to
employment rights.
How much will I get paid?
The question that everyone wants to know! Your pay will depend on your qualifications, skills,
experience and whether you’re doing an apprenticeship or other training programme. There are
different levels of minimum wage:
3 3 £4.05 an hour for under 18 year olds.
(Must be above school leaving age.
Doesn’t apply if you’re doing an
apprenticeship.)
3 3 £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds.
3 3 £7.05 an hour for 21-24 year olds.
3 3 £3.50 an hour for apprentices age 16 - 18
or in their first year (some employers pay
more than this)
Minimum wage correct from 1 April 2017.
Based on the minimum wage, the starting salary for an 18 year
old could begin at £10,774 a year for a job working 37 hours a
week. The National Living Wage was introduced in April 2016
for all working people aged 25 and over at £7.50 an hour. See

Staying on in education or training until 18 (Raising the
Participation Age)
Young people in England have to continue in education or training
until their 18th birthday. This doesn’t mean that you have to stay on
at school, there are a number of options that you can choose:
» » Study full-time such as in a school, college or with a training
provider
» » Full-time work or volunteering combined with part-time
education or training
» » An apprenticeship
