CREATIVE & CULTURE
You might think that you just need a creative streak to land your dream
job in this industry but many roles in the creative sector involve working
with the latest technologies which are helping to drive the sector
forwards. Job areas include film and TV, social media, advertising, fashion,
computer games and animation.

What is happening?
• The creative sector is a priority area for Derby
and Derbyshire meaning support for local jobs.
• Globally, creative jobs are expected to grow
rapidly over the next few years.
• Competition for jobs is fierce. Number of people
working in the creative industries with a degree
is very high (90% for new entrants to computer
games industry). Experience is beneficial.
Useful subjects
• Cluster of computer games design companies
in Derby and some of the best computer games
courses at the University of Derby.
• Over 50% of creative jobs are in London and the
South-East.
• Many people work freelance which means less
job security.
• 90% of companies employ fewer than five
people.
• Shortage of graphic designers, storyboard artists,
games designers, programmers, broadcast
engineers, social media specialists, illustrators
and pattern cutters.
