of terrain some would call a waste-
land. A road cut into the side of hills that grew to mountains,
flanked on both sides by clearcuts.
It was also exactly the type of terrain my buddy Dan and
I wanted. It was a spur off a spur, off a spur, off a spur, off a
spur, off the main road — a dizzying amount of “stay lefts” that was
hopefully more work than other hunters were willing to do. The road
curved back and forth providing different vantage points of the tree-
less acreage.
It had been a few years since it had been logged and the land was
being reclaimed by leaves and berries that attract deer, and hunters
like Dan and me. In the folds and wrinkles of the steep slope there
