Capturing the Scene Photographer Thomas Fletcher is surrounded by beauty By Michelle James, West Virginia South Editor ❖ Images by Thomas Fletcher I t was most likely the beauty of the shaded, moss-covered banks that did it. That was back before the days of running water in the Cowan area of Webster County, where Thomas Fletcher grew up. He thinks he probably wasn’t even 18 months old, but some events are too monumental to be forgotten. “I slipped off at my grandma’s and she couldn’t find me,” he says. “The whole bank behind her house was covered in moss and it was just a beautiful location. That’s the first mental picture I have is her spring in the mountain. “It’s a great view.” Fletcher fell in love with the outdoors that day, and also felt the first sparks of a creative fire he wouldn’t fully understand for years to come. 60 ❖ SOUTH ❖ APRIL-MAY '19
