Don’t Be Afraid to Break the “Rules” To break the rules, you must first know the rules. In other words, you must understand the reasoning behind a rule of composition before you choose, for artistic reasons, to break it. Consider why I break the composition rules in “The Garden of Good and Evil”. In this image, I center an evening primrose plant rather than offset it according to the rule of thirds. But I did this for specific, artistic reasons. This con- figuration emphasizes the contrasts between light and dark, pointed and rounded, and soft and sharp focus. My intent is to show, in equal pro- portions, the clash of opposites. I hope these tips enhance your enjoyment of wildflower photogra- phy and serve as encouragement to observe and study the wildflowers with which West Virginia is so rich- ly blessed. The beauty of wildflowers is literally scattered in abundance at our feet. Happy wildflower hunting! 36 ❖ SOUTH ❖ APRIL-MAY '19
