ON THE MENU Out of the Box Family recipes provide lasting memories By Audrey Stanton-Smith, Photo by Chris Jackson M y mother and her older sister were elbow deep in potato salad when the phone rang. It was their younger sister, asking if there might be anything she could pick up on her way. “Rolls.” Aunt Julia said. “Just bring the old family recipe.” When Aunt Janet finally arrived, she flung a grocery bag of yeast rolls onto the remaining inch of counter space. “There is no kind of roll in the entire store called Old Family Recipe,” she said. “I hope these will do.” The other two sisters laughed. Turns out our “old family recipe” for rolls means buying a box of yeast rolls from the refrigerated section, placing them in a muffin pan in front of the wood stove, waiting for them to rise, and then baking them in the oven. 28 ❖ SOUTH ❖ APRIL-MAY '19
