the second annual Morgantown
Marathon is poised to attract up
to 2,000 runners and walkers and
10,000 spectators to the city of
Morgantown, with an estimated
economic impact of $500,000.
More than 1,200 runners traveled
from 36 states and six countries to
participate in the 2015 inaugural
event, which provided the
opportunity to showcase the
beauty of West Virginia in the fall.
Marathon weekend kicks off on
Thursday, September 15, with
a welcome event at the new
Monongalia County Ballpark and
continues through Sunday with
the full marathon, half marathon,
Mountain Mama 8K & Family
Fun Run, Massage Envy Health
& Wellness Expo and post-race
celebrations at Tent City.
Proceeds from the race benefit
Operation Welcome Home
(OWH), West Virginia’s premier
organization for veteran affairs.
OWH honors and supports
veterans through medical
and rehabilitation assistance,
mentorship, peer counseling,
employment and referrals to
other programs, with a focus on
veterans helping veterans.
The highlight of the weekend is
the 26.2 Almost Heavenly Miles full
marathon, which begins at 7 a.m.
on Sunday, September 18, at the
West Virginia University Coliseum.

to the winners of this year’s full
and half marathon races, as well
as to the first male and female
West Virginians to cross the finish
line. Participants will also receive
swag, a finisher’s medal and
running shirts.

donate online to OWH, and if
you can’t donate, Summerlin
suggests volunteering. Last
year’s event required the help of
500 volunteers from all over the
community and state.
