West Virginia Executive Summer 2014 - Page 22

By Amy Arnett In 2014, the energy industry continued to evolve in the Mountain State by way of the booming oil and natural gas industry and its role in the reemergence of the state’s manufacturing industry. Though natural gas and manufacturing are on the brink of major expansions in the state, highlights from all sectors of the energy industry took center stage in the spring issue. West Virginia’s Secretary of Commerce and Executive Director of the Development Office Keith Burdette shared insight into the history and future of one of West Virginia’s defining industries, how it’s driving manufacturing and its impact on the economy. Bob Murray, CEO of Murray Energy Corporation, shared his determination to fight the ongoing obstacles faced by coal. At the Executive Energy Celebration, guest speakers included Dr. Ed Welch, president of University of Charleston; John Meehan, CEO of the Mid-South Region for USI Insurance Services; Anne Blankenship, a shareholder in the Environmental Services and Energy & Natural Resources groups at Babst Calland, Attorneys at Law and Maribeth Anderson, the senior director of Corporate Development and Government Relations for Chesapeake Energy and the West Virginia state lead for America’s Natural Gas Alliance. Speakers touched on the importance of energy and manufacturing to the state, the business community and their organizations, including the way in which natural gas expansion and development will shape the future of West Virginia. Two hundred of West Virginia’s finest met in the rotunda at Riggleman Hall for an evening of networking and a united appreciation for the achievements made by the businesses in energy and other industries alike. Guests were encouraged to take home koozies designed especially for the event and enjoy the university’s excellent catering. At West Virginia Executive, we are extremely grateful for the partnerships formed with our advertisers and sponsors because we could not accomplish all that we do without them. We would like to thank the outstanding businesses who sponsored the 2014 Executive Energy Celebration: University of Charleston, USI Insurance Services, Babst Calland, Attorneys at Law, America’s Natural Gas Alliance and BrickStreet Insurance.  Photography by Tracy Toler 22 west virginia executive
