Since 2011, leaders in Wyoming County
have been working toward the renovation of
the former Lusk Lumber property in Tralee,
WV. With funding from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s Brownfields Clean-Up
Grant and in partnership with Main Street
Builders, the West Virginia Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) and the West
Virginia Brownfields Assistance Centers, the
Wyoming County Economic Development
Authority (EDA) has completed the remediation
of the site, which is now home to the
Barkers Creek Industrial Park.
The 11-acre industrial park includes amenities
like public water, an on-site septic
system, on-site power and access to rail,
internet, phone and natural gas, and readyto-build
space is available. Two spaces
are currently being leased by Vecellio &
Grogan, Inc. and PDK Construction, Inc.,
both contractors for the ongoing Route 10
road expansion project from the Mercer
County line to the Logan County line. On the
other side of the park is the new Coalfields
Expressway, which is expected to open
this fall.
“We are excited for all of the opportunities
Barkers Creek Industrial Park will bring to
our county,” says Christy Laxton, executive
director of the Wyoming County EDA. “This
project is an economic driver that will bring
new industry, new business, new jobs and a
new sense of hope for the people of Wyoming
County. With the new surrounding roads and
proximity to hubs like Beckley, Princeton and
Bluefield via the new Route 10 and Coalfields
Expressway, the location is ideal.”
Wyoming County’s other prominent site,
the John D. Rockefeller Industrial Park,
has been full since 2006. The success of
this site provided the opportunity needed
to offer another location for business and
industrial growth.
“Wyoming County is a little different than
most,” says Laxton. “Our industrial parks
are not hundreds or thousands of acres,
but what happens here is just as important.
We are proud to have companies that do
work globally, and we want to let people
know that the skill set of our workforce and
the location of this new industrial park make
our rural community the perfect place for
industries and businesses to call home. Our
goal is to have businesses thriving at the
industrial park, providing jobs and using the
railroad if needed. We want to have families
living in our local communities and utilizing
the local education system. We want everyone
to know that the decision to have their
business in Wyoming County was the best
one they ever made. I want them to be happy
to call Wyoming County home, just like I am.”
While the completion of Barkers Creek
Industrial Park from site assessment to
remediation was a long and challenging
process, the Wyoming County EDA, its
consultants and partners are excited about
the progress that has already been made
as well as future progress. With ready-tobuild
property, easy access to utilities and
travel access to points across the country,
Barkers Creek Industrial Park will provide
excellent opportunities for businesses to
locate, expand and hire in Wyoming County.
