also works during summer advising and registration sessions. “Shepherd University is extremely proud of Dr. Hanrahan and her commitment to excellence in training the next generation,” says Shepherd University President Dr. Mary Hendrix. “We are most fortunate to have faculty who excel in teaching, and we are grateful that these efforts are recognized at the highest level in West Virginia.” Spine and Nerve Center Offers Minimally Invasive, Non-Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain Management Dr. Timothy Deer and Dr. Warren Grace of The Spine and Nerve Center of Saint Francis Hospital have now treated the first patients in West Virginia with the SPRINT Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) System. Patients are participating in a large clinical trial for the treatment of chronic lower back pain, and Deer and his colleagues are also offering the FDA-approved therapy to chronic pain patients outside of the study. The SPRINT System is the world’s only non-permanent, minimally invasive PNS system. Its tiny MicroLead is constructed using a 100-micron wire and implanted under ultrasound guidance to target a peripheral nerve. The MicroLead is con- nected to a small wearable stimulator that sends electrical pulses to the nerve to provide pain relief and is withdrawn in the office after 60 days of treatment. In multiple studies, the SPRINT PNS System has demonstrated the ability to provide effective and sustained improve- ments in pain and function for 12 months or longer after the MicroLead has been withdrawn. “In addition to chronic back pain, studies have shown that SPRINT PNS is effective to treat other pain conditions as well, including shoulder pain, post- amputation pain and post-operative pain,” says Deer. “As we battle the opioid crisis, there is a huge unmet need for less invasive treatments. I’m excited about having this option available for my pa- tients to help prevent, reduce or eliminate opioid use.” changes, including more excursions and new ownership.
