Community and Technical College System Grants Automatic Admission to High School Seniors
The West Virginia Community and Technical College System ( WVCTCS ) has launched a new initiative to help boost the college-going rate of high school graduates in the Mountain State . All recent West Virginia high school graduates have been automatically accepted into their local community and technical college .
“ Our high school graduates are the future of West Virginia . They embody our hopes and dreams for our beloved state ,” says WVCTCS Chancellor Sarah Tucker . “ West Virginia ’ s community and technical colleges want them to know they have a future here . We offer a variety of programs that will lead them to high-wage jobs right here at home .”
Community colleges are the most affordable higher education opportunity in the state and often lead directly to employment . The result is an affordable education leading to jobs that keep young people in West Virginia .
2017 EMS Conference Provides West Virginia Officials Education and Networking
Emergency Medical Service ( EMS ) officials from across West Virginia recently met in Morgantown for the 2017 EMS Conference to learn about a variety of issues , including substance abuse , patient customer service and an interstate compact to facilitate disaster response .
Although a plethora of topics were discussed , West Virginia EMS Coalition Executive Director Chris Hall believes the biggest issue discussed at the conference was funding .
“ Medicaid reimbursements for ambulance services have not increased in more than 17 years , making it very difficult to keep pace with the rising costs of fuel , wages , insurance , medical supplies , drugs and equipment ,” says Hall . “ With 28 percent of all West Virginians on Medicaid , there just aren ’ t enough other sources of reimbursement to compensate for nearly two decades of stagnant rates .”
Additional topics tackled by administrators and first responders during the three-day educational and networking conference covered ways to improve response times , updating the community EMS model , traumatic brain injury care , workforce optimization , sepsis , mental health and signs of a heart attack .
