nutrition and education , and it ’ s seeing success on many levels , including participation among both senior citizens and children and an improvement in the children ’ s educational performance .
“ We ’ ve been able to feed or provide meals for thousands of children ,” says Unger . “ It also provides working families some relief and support in the summer months . It has given children opportunities to really continue their education in the summer . Teachers are saying by keeping these children active both physically and mentally and also having nutritious meals with a caring adult in their life , the kids are more postured and positioned to learn when they come back to school .”
The senator also says the program is an answer to a major flaw in today ’ s society — the belief that education occurs only within the school system .
“ Education occurs outside the schools just as much as it does inside the schools ,” says Unger . “ The Feed to Achieve summer program has taken the concept of public education beyond the classroom , and people can now see education as more than just our schools — it is the whole community .”
The Summer Intergenerational Community Strong Initiative is a USDA-sponsored Summer Food Service Program , and in 2016 , the USDA presented Unger with a plaque to show appreciation for his contributions .
“ It ’ s a model program the USDA is taking on the road to encourage other states to implement ,” says Unger . “ For once , West Virginia is known for being first in something that ’ s so positive . We are working to make communities where people want to live .”
These efforts will not become stagnant . The program will continue next summer with new ideas and groups coming into play .
“ Every year we try to add to the program ,” says Unger . “ We ’ re looking at opportunities to bring in private sector businesses to work with the kids to get them interested in different career paths . We want to show them what ’ s out there and allow them to dream great dreams . They may not have anyone at home to tell them how much they ’ re worth . By bringing in young adults and businesses , we want to instill in our youth at an early age that they can dream — if they set their mind to it , they can achieve anything .” •
