WELLINGTON TODAY 2017 WELLINGTON COLLEGE CHINA BOARDING AT WELLINGTON Boarding at Wellington College in Tianjin and Shanghai aims to provide a nurturing environment in which pupils can grow, engage and learn. Wellington boarders develop in an environment that is friendly, stimulating, sociable and structured, helping them to become true Wellingtonians. During their daily routine, the boarders have supervised ‘prep’ (or homework) sessions before dinner. The boarders have prearranged, supervised access to College facilities, including the gym, swimming pool and other indoor and outdoor sporting facilities. The expectation of the dedicated head of boarding and boarding tutors is to develop a feeling of togetherness, openness and positivity among all the boarders and boarding house staff, creating a family atmosphere in which everyone can reach their potential. Our strong partnership with Wellington UK allows unparalleled access to decades of pastoral wisdom and experience. The Benson House in Tianjin and the Hill House in Shanghai aim to become a home from home for the boarders and endeavour to make boarding the most complete experience available, giving children the opportunity to thrive and develop academically, physically and socially, as well as to build friendships which last a lifetime. PUPILS’ TESTIMONIALS AT HILL ‘I love the boarding house, I consider it as my second home, the environment and all the benefits that come from the boarding house make me feel great. Not only do we live close by but also we get to be a part of something outstanding, a community that supports each other in every way. The boarding house gives us the chance to be independent, to make the friends and memories of a lifetime. It is a great experience that no one should miss.’ Serena, Head of House Wellington College International Shanghai ‘Boarding at Wellington is an amazing experience, everyone knows each other, everyone gets along and we always support and help each other in every way we can. For new boarders, we welcome them to our big family. We always get everyone to do everything together and trying to get everyone to try new things. No matter what problems there are, we always fix it at the end. An advantage we get for boarding is that we get to use the school facilities after the school day, like the pool, the sports hall or the field. It is a great opportunity, and an awesome experience!’ Jasper, Deputy Head of House Jasper Wellington College International Shanghai ‘I’m now eight weeks into boarding and I already love it. I’m surrounded by such an encouraging and positive space and it has pushed and convinced me that I need to try new things. It has taught me that I will never learn anything new if I just stick to the same thing over and over again. It has taught me that we should be creative and think outside of the box and that we can stand out in our own different ways. The boarding house has not just benefited me but the others around me; they disciplined us and they supported us, just like a family would.’ Tiana Wellington College International Shanghai 56 57
