WELLINGTON TODAY 2017
WELLINGTON COLLEGE CHINA
OUR
TEACHERS
Without a doubt, we have what can only be described as an
outstanding team of teachers at Wellington College International
China, with over 100 teachers in Tianjin, 130 in International
Shanghai and 40 in Bilingual Shanghai. The excellent r eputation
of Wellington, both in China and the UK, and the quality of our
facilities in Tianjin and Shanghai, has meant that we have been
able to recruit an academic team of the highest quality. Educated
at some of the world’s best universities, and with teaching
experience at a wide range of outstanding schools in the UK and
overseas, their commitment and enthusiasm is second to none.
Some have taught at Wellington College UK, and the majority
have also spent time there getting to know the ins and outs
of our partner school, either as part of the staff induction
programme that we have run there for the last five years or on
subsequent visits for professional development or accompanying
exchange groups.
All are fully involved in the co-curricular and pastoral side of
school life, as well as in the classroom. The working relationship
between the academic and the outstanding non-academic team
would be the envy of any school, and has been a critical factor
in allowing us to achieve what we have since opening our first
school in China in August 2011.

JULIAN JEFFREY SECOND MASTER &
HEAD OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL
JAYNE SABIO HEAD OF SIXTH FORM & MFL
Julian Jeffrey’s undergraduate degree was in History from the
University of Durham, with a postgraduate Teacher Training
qualification (PGCE) from the University of Exeter. He has
taught in London, at one of the top independent girls’ schools
in the UK, as well as Wellington College in Berkshire. It was
here that he spent almost 18 years, as Head of History and
Assistant Housemaster, but the role involved far more than
that. Initially combining the role with a part-time lecturing
position at the University of Reading, he took on a range of
academic responsibilities including A level Examinations’ Officer
and lead teacher for staff training and development. In addition
to his teaching roles, Julian was a governor of an Independent
Preparatory School in Surrey for six years and a freelance
Educator for the Holocaust Educational Trust charity since 2009. Jayne studied French and Spanish (languages and literature) at
Manchester University, then completed a TEFL course and went
to work in Madrid as an English teacher. She was promoted to
Director of Studies after the first year. After 5 years in Madrid
(where she met husband, Manuel), she decided to go back to the
UK where she did her PGCE at Liverpool University. Jayne went
on to work at The King’s School in Chester where she spent
15 years as a French and Spanish teacher and more recently
teacher in charge of Spanish. Throughout that time, Jayne was
a Sixth Form tutor and claims to have written over 200 UCAS
references – an expert indeed! She has been an AQA examiner
for Spanish over the past 8 years for A level units 1, 2 and 3. In
her spare time, Jayne plays the violin to grade 8 violin. Her two
sons, Alejandro (Year 9) and Marcos (Year 7), join Jayne and
Manuel here at Wellington College.

academic and pastoral needs, promoting and extending the skills
and aptitudes of learners preparing for public examinations,
University and Oxbridge candidates. He has been a Head of
Learning Support and Personalised Learning at two of the
leading and highest achieving independent schools in the UK,
Christ’s Hospital School and Tonbridge. Jonathan has expertise
in applied behavioral psychology and metacognition, ensuring

pastoral care and social and emotional aspects of the curriculum
