Cochrane lies on the forty-ninth parallel. As such, its latitude is the same as the greater part of the border between the United States and Western Canada. Cochrane is served by Highway 11, the northern route of the Trans-Canada Highway, and by the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission, which offer passenger train service to Moosonee, on the James Bay Coast.

Welcome to your new community of Cochrane, Ontario the town that is wonderfully unexpected!

Cochrane is home to many amenities that are attractive to people of all ages. An active community all throughout the year and four seasons Cochrane is a recreationally driven community. Home of the Tim Horton Event Centre, the only Bike Share program in Northern Ontario, a local supervised community beach (in the middle of town) that allows people to enjoy all watersports. Surrounded by vast rural areas, the adventurer will find extensive kilometers of trails for cycling, hiking, ATVing, snowmobiling and other power sports. Some near water bodies that offer the perfect fishing conditions and others near sandy beaches perfect for a camping getaway in the Northern wilderness, which is Cochrane's backyard.

“Chimo” is an important word to understand in Cochrane, it is an Inuit word that means: “I am friendly” or “Welcome”, and it is the resident greeting during our Winter Carnival and is the name of our town mascot. You've seen our mascot on your way into town it's the giant Polar Bear. Chimo greets our visitors at the entrance of town alongside the Cochrane welcome sign. You've seen this sign before also; in Toronto! Did you know Cochrane is the most northern point of Younge Street, the town wanted to commemorate this, and what better way then to have a twin sign to Toronto which is the start of Younge Street.

Did you know that Chimo isn't the only polar bear in Cochrane... We have more and they are real! That's Wonderfully Unexpected! They live at the Polar Bear Habitat, open 363 days a year!

Cochrane is also famous for Tim Horton, not the donuts, but the hockey player that started the restaurant chain.
