Weekend Warrior Woodworking Issue #1 December 2013 | Page 34

Once there are no gaps, and the boards are the same width and thickness, decide on a taper for the face of your winding sticks. I chose something around 1/4" , and marked a line with my marking gauge. I darkened the line with a mechanical pencil to make the layout easier. Simply strike a line from the 1/4 mark to the corner of the edge grain, and use this to line up the cut on the bandsaw.

1/4" mark for the taper

The bandsaw makes quick work of this taper by tilting the table. Keep the pencil line for reference.

After the cut on the bandsaw either plane or sand the wood to leave a smooth edge. This isn’t a reference surface, so it doesn't need to be perfect. You can even leave it rough if you want. Now, aren’t you glad you didn’t spend time smoothing the face of the boards?
