New department building a ‘powerhouse in social science’
P
amplin College is buzzing with exciting
developments: a newly renovated ceramics
and sculpture studio; a new degree
concentration in animation is being developed;
the renewed partnership with the Harry Jacobs
Chamber Music Society is bringing increased
visibility to the music programs; the Department
of Communication is now the home for the

Southeastern Review of Journalism History; the Sand
Hills literary magazine is a national publication;
the new “Arts Incubator” Living Learning
Community began this fall; and a multimillion-
dollar renovation of the Fine Arts Center will
commence this winter.
In the midst of all this activity, “the social
sciences have been getting less recognition than
they deserve,” Dean Elna Green stated. “The
faculty are talented and productive; the degree
programs are strong; but we needed to bring a
spotlight their way.”
So, on Jan. 1, 2018, the Dean announced the
creation of a new Department of Social Sciences.
