W
hen Harry Jacobs was hired as the first chair of the
Department of Fine Arts at Augusta College in 1963,
he was already synonymous with the classical music
scene in the city. He had founded the Augusta Civic Orchestra (now
the Augusta Symphony) in 1954, which he led as the conductor
and artistic director for the next 37 years. Jacobs also led the effort
to create WACG, one of the first college radio stations in Georgia,
which he then served as station manager. And Harry and his wife,
Vola, had worked to establish the Augusta Academy of Music.
