elcome to the inaugural issue of Pamplin College’s news
magazine, #WeArePamplin. Our goal is to keep our alumni and
friends up-to-date with all the activities and events in the
Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
As you all know, Augusta University has undergone a lot of very dramatic
changes in the last five years. We are a very different institution today, with
a new name, new leaders and programs, and a new mission. Pamplin
College has kept its name but many other things have changed and we want
to keep our friends and alums informed about these exciting initiatives and
innovations.
Each issue of #WeArePamplin will contain profiles of students, faculty,
and alumni. We will brag a little about the accomplishments, awards,
and recognitions that have come our way. We will provide you with
opportunities to connect with fellow alumni across the globe. And we
will highlight opportunities to engage with and support our current
students.
I hope you will like what you find here. And if you have ideas for stories,
suggestions for other ways to convey the kind of information you want,
please let me know.
This news magazine is for you!
Pamplin 2023: The Strategic Plan
T
o borrow an idea from Seneca, if you don’t know which port you’re
headed to, no wind is favorable. During 2017-18, Pamplin College
engaged in a year-long project to define our direction for the next
five years.
The University had just completed its own strategic plan, called “Beyond
Boundaries.” At the start of fall semester, Dean Elna Green assembled a
Task Force comprised of Pamplin faculty, staff, and students, and charged
them to create a strategic plan for the College. Green announced that the
plan should:
• map closely to the University’s Strategic Plan
• recognize that goals and aspirations should also be fundable to be fully
attained
• advance student success (retention, progression, and graduation)
• set high standards for faculty research and creative activity
• nurture interdisciplinarity (both across departments and across
colleges)
The Task Force, chaired by Dr. John Hayes of the Department of
History, conducted surveys, held “town hall” listening sessions, and met
with faculty and staff in a variety of ways to gather input from every
constituency in the College. Faculty were given several opportunities to

weigh in on the proposed document.
In May 2018, the Task Force submitted the proposed plan and it was
then approved by the faculty in a college-wide vote.
Green announced to the College, “I am very pleased to accept that
overwhelmingly positive recommendation. This is now OUR Strategic
Plan.” She thanked the Task Force for its hard work, noting “this was
faculty-led and fully consultative.”
Now called Pamplin 2023, the new strategic plan will guide the direction
and development of the College through the next five years.
