John Hayes, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy
• Pamplin College Outstanding Faculty Member award for 2017-2018
Congratulations to Dr. John Hayes for receiving the
Pamplin College Outstanding Faculty Member award
for 2017-2018.
Dean Elna Green nominated him for the honor,
noting that “Dr. Hayes has a record of outstanding
teaching, scholarship, and service to the College.”
This was an especially notable year for him, she
said, “because his first book was published by a top
university press, and because he chaired the College’s
Strategic Planning Task Force this year.”
The Task Force worked all year to produce the
College’s five-year strategic plan, called Pamplin
2023.
Hayes earned his Ph.D. from the University of
Georgia in 2007. He has taught at Augusta University
since 2011 and focuses on Southern history, American
religion, and United States history during the 19th
and 20th century. Hayes also serves as Committee
Chair for the Faculty Council.
“I am grateful to be recognized,” Hayes said.
He believes that recognition is a key part of
compensation for the work that professors do and
is honored that he was selected as the Outstanding
Faculty Member in Pamplin.

Jana Sandarg, Ph.D.
Professor, Department of English and Foreign Languages
• Office of Faculty Development and Teaching Excellence “Caught in the Act” Award
for Collegiality
Congratulations to this year’s winner of the Office
of Faculty Development and Teaching Excellence
“Caught in the Act” Award for Collegiality – Dr. Jana
Sandarg, Professor of Spanish.
The OFDTE awards are given to faculty members
each year who represent the core values of Augusta
University.
“It’s wonderful, especially since this will be my last
year teaching,” Sandarg said.
She plans to retire this summer after 38 years of
teaching at Augusta University. Sandarg teaches
multiple levels of Spanish language and culture in the
Department of English and Foreign Languages. She
also directs the popular Study Abroad program in
Salamanca, Spain.
“It makes you feel good,” said Sandarg. “You’ve
given a lot of yourself, your talents, and your time,
to the institution and to the students. To have
your colleagues say you’re collegial really means a
lot.”
She feels very lucky to have such kind and caring
colleagues. Sandarg also won a specially reserved
parking space for the year, which she is very excited
about.
Seretha Williams, Ph.D.
Professor, Department of English and Foreign Languages
• Office of Development and Teaching Excellence “Caught in the Act” Award for Integrity
Congratulations to Dr. Seretha Williams of the
Department of English and Foreign Languages for
winning the Office of Development and Teaching
Excellence “Caught in the Act” Award for exemplifying
Integrity, one of Augusta University’s core values.
Williams teaches many courses on Women’s and
Gender Studies and world literature, and is a member
of Augusta University’s Women’s and Gender Studies
Program.
“I am intentional about being consistent in my
principles, my values, and my actions. Thus, the
integrity award from my peers reinforces my resolve
to be a fair and trustworthy colleague,” Williams
said.
Williams believes that peer recognition is important
to faculty morale and that awards such as this one
highlight the work of faculty that is often overlooked
and not acknowledged.
