IN THE SPOTLIGHT Faculty Awards Giada Biasetti, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Department of English and Foreign Languages • American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Professor of the Year Award for the Georgia Chapter Congratulations to Dr. Giada Biasetti for receiving the Professor of the Year Award for the Georgia Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Dr. Biasetti teaches a variety of Spanish language classes, including Hispanic Literature. After winning the award, she said she was grateful, excited, humbled, and could not wait to tell her family, friends, and colleagues. “The AATSP Professor of the Year Award means a lot to me because it represents a great achievement and motivates me to continue working hard for my students,” Biasetti said. “It is an honor to have been nominated and I am truly humbled to have won this prestigious award. It shows the support one can receive from students and colleagues.” Biasetti believes awards like this are a great way to motivate and appreciate faculty members. “We all appreciate the fact that this kind of recognition exists. It makes the job we are already passionate about a lot more exciting,” she said. Allison Foley, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Department of Social Sciences • “Caught in the Act” of Leadership by the Office of Faculty Development and Teaching Excellence • 2018 Richard C. Wallace Distinguished Service Award from the University Senate Dr. Allison Foley, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, received two important University recognitions last spring. She was “Caught in the Act” of Leadership by the Office of Faculty Development and Teaching Excellence, and also received the 2018 Richard C. Wallace Distinguished Service Award from the University Senate. Dr. Kim Davies, chair of the Department of Social Sciences, nominated Foley for the Distinguished Service Award, writing that, “In the community, Dr. Foley has given lectures on Prison and Death Row at the Maxwell Public Library and the Augusta Public Library. She has given many interviews and has spoken for the Central Savannah Rivera Area Peace Alliance and at the Meeting of Ministers and Congregants in Action. She has worked with others on our campus to apply for grants for programs from the Office of Violence against Women and the Avon Foundation for Women Campus Grants to Activate Bystanders to Reduce Sexual Assault, Dating Abuse 10 | #WeArePamplin · Fall 2018 and Stalking.” “When you see Violence Awareness events on our campus in the fall or Take Back the Night events on our campus in the spring, it is because of Dr. Foley,” said Davies. Foley is encouraged by both of these awards and is happy that others are supportive and recognize the planning and hard work that goes into month-long event series like those raising awareness for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. “I just felt very grateful to the colleagues here at AU and out in our community who nominated me,” Foley said. “Each of these awards means a great deal to me as they are each the result of nearly a decade’s work bringing domestic violence and sexual violence awareness and prevention programming to our campus.” Foley teaches classes covering the Criminal Justice system, including Gender and Victimization and Social Deviance. She is also the Director of the Center for Social Science Research.
