quine Trail Sports judges are volunteers and give their time and dedication to Equine Trail Sports events. ETS is excited to introduce the Judge Awards Program giving judges their well-deserved recognition for their very much appreciated efforts.

JUDGING AN ETS EVENT

Judging an ETS event is not only a lot of fun, it also provides an exciting perspective and learning opportunity that you would not normally get as a rider. By watching and judging many horses go through the obstacle, the judge is able to witness the partnership between horse and rider on many different levels. It is often a very gratifying experience.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ETS JUDGES

Anyone that has a solid understanding of basic horsemanship skills can judge an ETS event. ETS trains all judges, mostly using our online learning tools and webinars. ETS trains the judge how to apply their knowledge to the scoring scale using the ETS Decision Tree. By using the Decision Tree, it not only makes scoring easier, but it provides a more consistent scoring system nationwide, which then provides fair and consistent scoring for host constructed tournaments, and national and regional tournaments. By following the Decision Tree, it is much simpler to immediately recognize a performance being in a particular range such as Average, Below Average, and Above Average.

COMPUTERIZED ACTIVITY TRACKING

Judges are linked to their obstacle(s) in the ETS Event Manager system by each Event Manager. This allows ETS to track the activity of the judge. A judge is considered certified when they complete the online learning tools, attend a judging clinic (live or webinar) and judge 2 ETS events. As the judge continues to judge ETS events, the judge continues to earn an award with each achieved level:

Certification – an ETS certification badge

100 Riders Judged – an ETS lanyard and a lapel pin that attaches to the lanyard

250, 500, 1000, 1500 Riders Judged – an ETS lapel pin that attaches to the lanyard

JUDGE'S ACCOUNT

ETS awards are shipped to each event. This includes the lifetime Star Rider awards, the lifetime Equine Carrot awards, and now the Judge Achievement awards. The recipient will automatically receive their award as long as they are on a roster at least 2 weeks prior to the event. Judges have the ability of letting us know where they’ll be either as a rider, volunteer, or as a judge, and ETS will ship the awards to that event along with the lifetime awards. This is accomplished through the judge’s account online.

SHADOW A JUDGE

Volunteers are always welcome at all ETS events. If you’re considering judging but are unsure, you can always ask to shadow a judge to gain more insight. If you know you’d like to judge an ETS event someday, it doesn’t hurt to get started.
