ask more from him. I had to learn to wait patiently, as he would tell me when he understood, with blowing out and yawning.

My lesson with Linda started with, “Let's see what you've got.” In the round corral, Josh was so attentive to me, even with several lively horses in the pasture nearby, he never looked away from me during the session. Linda helped me with going along with Josh's ideas, (a hard thing for me to consistently do!) He begged to be with me, his look was soft and kind. When I asked him out on a circle, he gave me a relaxed canter. I asked him in and Linda said she would give me a leg up onto his back... My eyes got wide, my palms of my hands began to sweat.

Josh had bucked me off many times in the past, and here Linda is ready to have me get on with no ropes or bridle!

But I trusted her, and she gave me a chance to approach and retreat by giving me several leg ups onto his back, without me actually mounting. Since Josh remained happy and my confidence soared with his response to this activity, I decided to mount by myself. I asked Josh to lower his head, and jumped up behind his ears.

Asking Linda what she thought, she said, “Go for it!” I tapped Josh on the shoulder, and he raised his head up and I wiggled up on to his back. I was on the mule and he was still happy!!

“Ok, that's your homework!”, said Linda. “This will heal the relationship.”

All summer, I asked Josh to come over and help me up on his back. We were both a little worried about each other at times. But, I always was ready to get off should he worry too much. He acted once like he might do something naughty to test the relationship, but I rubbed him reassuringly, and he just lowered his head and blew out. I was riding Josh in open fields, bareback and bridleless! I dream of trust and harmony I never thought possible with this mule!

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Pat and Linda Parelli, for saving my life and the future of my mule, Josh.

What a ride it's been over the years, and now I can share my understanding with other people who struggle to achieve trust and harmony with their horses.
