TRIP and CHIP both recognize the achievements of riding the trails for accumulation levels of mileage and hours ridden. Organized trail events sanctioned with the NWHA also grant members the opportunity to earn double mileage/hours. Trail class events at horse shows affiliated or sanctioned through the NWHA can also count towards the CHIP program.

NWHA has sanctioned trail rides throughout the calendar year across the U.S. Trail rides in California's mountains and coast, charity fundraising trail events in Texas, trail obstacle challenges in Alabama as well as overnight trail excursions in Tennessee to name just a few. NWHA also partners with Best of America by Horseback, a televised trail promotion program that features trail ride destinations, their historical importance and locations coupled with beautiful scenery that can only be viewed on horseback.

Join us, saddle up and hit the trails with the NWHA and begin your journey in the TRIP/CHIP programs!

The National Walking Horse Association, an advocate against abusive and inhumane treatment of the Walking Horse and other gaited breeds, promotes the general welfare and natural abilities of the Walking horse through a variety of events and programs. Founded in 1998, a 501(c)(3), the NWHA offers a variety of programs for gaited horse enthusiasts including two very active Trail Programs.

For the leisurely recreational trail rider, NWHA's Trail Rider Incentive Program (TRIP) offers NWHA members opportunities to pursue awards each year through hours spent in the saddle, out on the trail. This complimentary program is available to NWHA members nationwide and requires only that you enroll your horse and log your hours. While you're out exploring America's trails, earn hours for riding your horse that can lead to year end awards for the prestigious Trail Rider or Trail Horse of the year!

NWHA also provides a trail program for the competitive trail rider through the Competitive Horse Incentive Program (CHIP). CHIP enrollment is a one time enrollment fee program for NWHA members who compete at competitive trail rides, endurance rides or trail obstacle challenge events. These judged trail events accrue mileage leading towards the pinnacle achievement of the Competitive Horse of the Year.
