Working Equitation, a relative new-comer to the equestrian sports landscape, combines the precision of dressage, the partnership of trail classes, and the adrenaline rush of timed events, with cattle handling, reminiscent of team penning, added to the mix at team events.

In the November 2016 issue of We Ride Sport and Trail, we highlighted the beautiful buckskin Lusitano stallion Andiamo 2005, who was the high scoring horse at the Advanced level in 2016, and Priscilla’s Flight, the incredibly athletic Australian Stockhorse mare who ended the 2016 at the top of the Leaderboard at the Intermediate level. In this issue, we’d like to honor the horses whose points garnered them high point breed awards for the 2016 season.

The top-scoring Morgan horse was Lisa’s Captain Jack. This beautiful bay gelding, out of PRM Rosalie and sired by Liz’s Blackjack, was bred by Lisa and Jude Spors-Murphy and is owned and competed by Rob Zimmerman of Ridgefield, Washington. Competing at the Introductory level, A Princess Warhawk earned the most points of all APHA-registered horses in Working Equitation during the 2016 competition year. This lovely paint mare, out of Princess Jane and sired by Cochise Royal Sun, was bred by Ann Willey and is owned and shown by Alicia Little of Oklahoma. Matt Command, a Quarter Horse gelding out of Matty Command by Chex On Three, was bred by David and Lorene Zimmerman and is owned and shown by Mary (Cassy) Holcomb, of Washington state. In 2016, Matt Command competed at the Novice level, where he stockpiled sufficient points to end the year topping the boards at #1 of 55 AQHA horses registered in the sport.

Not to be outdone, the high point Haflinger competing in working equitation was Mahon II FLH (Willie-T-Wiffic RWF x Mahon). Mahon II FLH was bred by John J. Miller and is owned and competed at the Introductory level by Denise J. Lukins, also of Washington state. The strikingly beautiful Friesian mare Yfke Von Borstal was the highest-point earner of all FHANA-registered horses competing in Working Equitation. “Marquesa” as she is known to her friends, was sired by Goffert out of Jette. She was bred by Lydia Von Borstal and is owned and competed by Lizann Dunegan of Portland, Oregon. CDC Memoria (Odalisca GF x Hilandero X), was bred by Julie Alonzo, Caballos del Corazón, who still owns and actively competes her.
