Your Help is Urgently Needed
We share with the Rickman family and friends a long-term mission to find permanent and bountiful home pasturage for the core breeding stock of the Heritage Horse, but the immediate and critical need is to provide supplemental feed and vet care year around for these small foundation herds. Your help is urgently needed.
The Heritage Horses have been proven by research to be descended from stock originally brought to the American colonies in the 1500s by the Spanish, and they are genetically distinct. Native Americans, such as the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Kiowa, and other tribal peoples eventually brought them to Oklahoma Indian Territory. Many traveled along the infamous Trail of Tears with the families for whom they had become essential helpmates. As we learn about the role these horses played in the cultural and economic development of Oklahoma, we discover the unique characteristics of stamina and gentle disposition which have enabled them to survive the threat of extinction. It also becomes clear that our continuing financial commitment and volunteer support is critical to the preservation of the foundation herds of this ancient strain of Colonial Spanish Mustang.
Your donation to our 2016-2017 Annual Fund will not only help sustain these rare, historic, and beautiful animals through the upcoming winter months, but also allow future generations to know, enjoy, and honor their heritage.
