Mentor: I have been lucky to have so many mentors over the years but one who stands out
is my undergraduate Spanish professor Dr. Bart Lewis. He was the first person I felt fully saw
me, understood me and supported my passion for language and literature.
Quote: I have a Ph.D. in Spanish from Stanford University with a specialty in Latin American
Poetry. I laugh as I write this as I am no longer a professor and life has taken me on some
amazing journeys but I am a life-long academic and lover of poetry. One of my favorite quotes
comes from Mary Oliver’s poem The Summer Day: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do/ with
your one wild and precious life?”
What makes me beautiful? What makes me beautiful is my love of life and my enthusiastic
nature that meets people where they are and sees the wonder in all things. I have been told
that I light up a room when I enter and I am proud of that ability to bring joy to others.
