he 7th Inter Livery Skiing was held at the end of
January in Morzine, Porte du Soleil.
Organised by The Ironmongers, the event has grown in
stature and participation and encapsulates the spirit and
bonhomie of livery life. A record 138 participants and 54
supporters enjoyed perfect, sunny weather for an
enthralling Giant Slalom. For the first time we welcomed
international representation in the form of the Three Kings
Guild from Zurich.
Captain Dr Alan Shepherd, ably supported by Liz
Thrussell and James Stevenson, formed The Information
Technologists’ team. Modern Livery companies are
sparse on the ground and our representation over the past
six years has been warmly welcomed. All our competitors
performed to a high standard in the individual competition
and, cheered on by Charles and Beverley Hughes,
achieved creditable positioning in the team competition.
The social aspects are equally important and the event
concluded with an enjoyable grand dinner and elaborate

prize-giving succeeded by a range of serious and humorous toasts.
Congratulations to Alan and team on another great performance and
flying the flag. More participants, especially younger members, to
compete with the Great Twelve, would be warmly welcomed for 2017.

On Shrove Tuesday the annual Inter Livery Pancake races were held in Guildhall
Yard. The races are organised by the Poulters’ Company and started with the firing
of a ceremonial cannon provided by the Gunmakers’ Company.
This year 21 teams were present representing ancient and modern Livery
Companies along with representatives from the Old Bailey. Our own team
comprised the Senior Warden (Deputising for the Master), Nick Claydon
(Liverymen race), Kirstin Duffield (Ladies race) and James Harkness
(Fancy Dress race). The Senior Warden put in a strong performance
but was pipped to the post, Nick decided to focus his talents on
consumption of pancakes, James experienced what, under different
circumstances, might be described as a ‘Wardrobe
Malfunction’ and Kirstin did what Kirstin always does - WINNING the
Ladies race!
Thanks go to Jolyon Parsons for organising the team, and to the Clerk for
rabble rousing the various WCIT members who were spectating in to a
rowdy chorus that narrowly avoided a breach of the peace...
